Bent has gone from World Cup reject to Euro hitman.. -:
Darren Bent has been told he triggered an unusual event when he notched his first England goal - Fabio Capello was spotted smiling on the touchline.
The first flicker of approval from the England boss came when Bent scored late against the Swiss, his first strike in six caps. From World Cup reject second time over, to a pivotal figure ahead of next week’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.
It has been some turnaround for Bent. A just reward for his continued plundering of goals in the Premier League, and his dignified and mature response when he was cut from Capello’s World Cup final squad.
Bent said: “Someone told me afterwards that the manager actually smiled when my goal went in. It has taken time for Bent to feel settled in the England squad.
“Next time I get on the pitch for England, hopefully on Tuesday I’ll feel more confident, like I’m going to get a goal or contribute something positive. “The first England goal has lifted a burden off me, most definitely. The goal really settled me down. “It is strange with England. Boss Bruce can sympathise with Bent’s England trials. Despite having success skippering Manchester United to trophies he was never called up. He has confidence this is Bent’s moment.
Bruce said: “I remember when I was playing and captaining Manchester United and winning titles, but I was continually overlooked for selection to the England squad.
