Giants ace Tim Lincecum shuts out Braves with a two-hitter -:
Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter. In degree of difficulty, however, Lincecum might have aced his rival ace.
Lincecum pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14, carrying the San Francisco Giants to a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League division series Thursday. With the crowd on its feet and waving orange rally towels throughout the ninth inning, Lincecum retired the top of the Atlanta lineup in order.
With his 119th and final pitch -- a 92 mph fastball -- Lincecum struck out Derrek Lee for the third time.
The Braves started Omar Infante at third base in place of the injured Jones, with Brooks Conrad at second base in place of the injured Martin Prado, and the ground balls found the subs.
In the third inning, Conrad had a ground ball go off his foot instead of his glove, his fifth error in five games.
Tim Lincecum Makes Argument For Best Start In Playoff History As Giants Squeak By Braves, 1-0 -:
For the sake of simplicity, we sorted by Game Score, and in the end, we saw that Halladay's start got a Game Score of 94, while the highest all-time was 98.
Thursday night, Tim Lincecum turned in a 96.
Emmel ruled safe, though, the Giants scored, and Lincecum did the rest. Lincecum allowed two hits - one of them to the first batter of the game - and one walk while striking out 14 in his playoff debut. More impressively, of the 55 swings Braves hitters took against his pitches, an unfathomable 31 of them missed. By and large, the Braves made their pitches. Lincecum just wouldn't give them a chance.
Lincecum got the win, and Lowe got the loss, allowing one run and eight baserunners over 5.1 innings. Game 2 will take place Friday night, with Matt Cain taking on Tommy Hanson.
